TERRA provided civil engineering services for the University of Chicago’s Campus South Walk. Our team’s scope involved preparing design, permitting, bid and construction documentation. The Campus South Walk links five major building construction projects and transform three city blocks with outdoor space.
The project included landscape design south of the east-west main pathway that “meanders” behind Rubenstein Forum, The Study Hotel, and Keller Center connecting 60th and 61st streets from Woodlawn to Kenmore. Schematic design included the partial redesign of the south end of the Rubenstein Forum site; landscape improvements around the future parking garage; parking lot improvements adjacent to the Keller Center and the future parking garage; adjacent landscape improvements; site furnishings; and conceptual lighting. The development also includes a new Arts Pavilion, gardens, lawns with seating, landscaped mounds, rain gardens, and sidewalk pathways. An extensive amount of reclaimed materials were used for the site furnishings and materials.
A significant goal of the project was to create synergies in the engineering of the area’s stormwater management. The Campus South Walk provided regional stormwater management for the project with bio-infiltration areas and underground storage, centralizing a strategy for the University in the area.
